Fellowship-trained joint replacement specialist Dr. James T. Carson brings in-depth expertise in hip and knee reconstruction to his new role at the CalvertHealth Center for Orthopedics & Sports Medicine. He has performed more than 4,000 joint replacement surgeries since 2017.
Dr. Carson treats general orthopedic issues relating to the knees, hips, shoulders, hands, wrists, feet and ankles. Additionally, he has extensive experience caring for patients with failed or infected joint replacements. “I have done a lot of revisions and I am not afraid to take on complex cases.”
After graduating from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in 2011, Dr. Carson went on to complete his orthopedic residency at Howard University Hospital in 2016 and a joint replacement fellowship at the University of Chicago – Louis A. Weiss Memorial Hospital in 2017. He also earned a master’s degree in public health from Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health in 2010.
“When patients come to see me, they are often a bit nervous, in pain and not sure about what their next step is. My focus is to listen and understand their unique needs and goals. I will discuss options and together we will come up with a plan. My goal is that when they leave, they feel very comfortable with my knowledge and capabilities; and more importantly, are confident in our treatment plan.”
Dr. Carson’s interest in orthopedic surgery began while in high school because of his lifetime in sports. His decision to focus on joint replacement came while in medical school after completing a medical mission trip in which he replaced hips and knees in multiple patients. “Just seeing the impact we had on those people’s lives … restoring their mobility and a lifetime of possibilities is what drew me to joint replacement.”
Dr. Carson is married with three children. He cherishes his family and enjoys spending time with them to experience new cultures. He is fluent in Spanish. Dr. Carson is a sports fanatic and a huge fan of all University of Michigan sports.
